Persian abjad: the same numbers, four more letters
Persian, also called Farsi, is written right to left in a script adapted from Arabic, expanded over the centuries to capture sounds the original 28-letter Arabic alphabet has no letters for. Persian scribes settled on four entirely new letters to fill that gap: پ (pe), چ (che), ژ (zhe), and گ (gāf), bringing the modern Persian alphabet to 32 letters against Arabic's 28. When Persian speakers apply abjad hisab, the same letter-to-number reckoning used across the Arabic-speaking and wider Islamic world, to their own alphabet, the 28 shared letters carry their familiar Arabic values unchanged, since Persian never rebuilt the underlying table from scratch. The four Persian-only additions never appeared in that original ordering at all, so applying the system to Persian required settling a genuine open question: what value should a letter that didn't exist when the abjad table was fixed actually carry? Arabic itself doesn't use these four sounds at all, which is exactly why Persian, along with related languages like Urdu that also borrowed the Perso-Arabic script, needed to solve this problem on its own rather than inheriting a ready-made answer.
The answer that Persian letter-arithmetic settled on is visual rather than arbitrary. Each of the four new letters was drawn as a small modification of an existing Arabic letter, adding extra dots or a stroke to an already-familiar shape rather than inventing a wholly new form, and each new letter conventionally takes the numeric value of the base letter it visually modifies. پ (pe) is written as ب (be) with three dots instead of one, so it carries ب's value, 2. چ (che) is written as ج (jim) with three dots instead of one, so it carries ج's value, 3. ژ (zhe) is written as ز (ze) with three dots instead of one, so it carries ز's value, 7. گ (gāf) is written as ک (kāf) with an added stroke across the top, so it carries ک's value, 20. This convention means a Persian abjad calculation only diverges from an Arabic one when a word or name actually contains one of these four extra letters; everywhere else, the two systems produce identical totals from identical letters.
What's historically attested
The abjad letter values themselves are thoroughly attested: the same reckoning used across the Arabic-speaking and wider Islamic world has been applied to Persian writing for many centuries, and the convention that the four Persian-only letters take the values of the Arabic letters they visually modify is a recorded scribal practice. Best documented of all is the chronogram: Persian and Ottoman poets composed phrases and verses whose letter values sum to the date of a building, a death or a coronation, and surviving literature preserves great numbers of them. Working out the abjad total of a name for interest is likewise a genuine, ongoing habit. What lacks historical grounding is the personality layer: reading fixed character traits from an abjad total is a modern development, and any Latin-input calculator adds a further layer of transliteration on top of it.
Name numbers and the art of the chronogram
Persian speakers still work out the abjad value of a name for personal interest today, much as practitioners of Arabic abjad hisab do, adding up each letter's value the same way regardless of whether the name draws on the shared 28-letter core or leans on one of the four Persian-only letters. Two people can compare the abjad totals of their given names the same way a Western reader might compare Pythagorean life path numbers, treating a shared or closely matching total as a point of light conversation. This everyday name-number habit is genuine and ongoing rather than a historical footnote, but it isn't Persian letter-arithmetic's most distinctive contribution to the wider abjad tradition.
That distinction belongs to the chronogram, known in Persian as maddeh tarikh, literally the substance of the date. A chronogram is a phrase or line of verse deliberately composed so that its letters, added up under abjad reckoning, sum to the exact year of a specific event: a ruler's death, the completion of a mosque or garden, a coronation. Classical Persian court poets treated this as a serious literary craft, not a parlor trick, since a successful chronogram had to work as genuine poetry, carrying real meaning and feeling, while simultaneously hiding an exact numeral inside its letters. Composing one well could take a skilled poet real time and several attempts, balancing the demands of grammar, meter, and meaning against the rigid arithmetic requirement underneath.
This chronogram tradition flourished for centuries specifically within Persian literary culture, appearing carved into building inscriptions, tomb markers, and manuscript colophons across the Persian-speaking world, and it continued to shape courtly poetry well into more recent centuries. A court poet composing a chronogram for a patron's new garden or a scholar's tomb was doing skilled, commissioned literary work, not idle wordplay; a well-turned chronogram could circulate and be admired on its poetic merits quite apart from the hidden date inside it. It sits alongside, but is distinct from, the general Arabic tarikh tradition that also used letter-counting for dates; Persian poets developed maddeh tarikh into an especially refined and long-lived art form within their own literary courts, giving Persian abjad numerology a genuinely distinct identity from the wider Arabic-language abjad tradition it shares its numeric core with.
A quick example
Take the Persian word گل (gol), meaning flower, spelled with two letters. گ (gāf) is one of the four Persian-only additions, so it takes the value of its base letter ک (kāf), which is 20. ل (lām) is one of the 28 shared Arabic letters, carrying its standard value of 30. Added together, 20 plus 30 comes to 50, the abjad value of گل under Persian reckoning. A chronogram composer working in the opposite direction would instead start from a target year and search for a meaningful phrase whose letters happen to sum to that exact number, a considerably harder task that could take real patience and poetic skill to complete well.
How this compares to Pythagorean numerology
Pythagorean numerology assigns letter values purely by position within the Latin alphabet, cycling A through I as 1 through 9 and then simply repeating the same nine values again from J onward. Persian abjad works on entirely different logic, inherited directly from the wider Arabic tradition: each letter carries its own individually fixed value, climbing from 1 all the way up toward 1000 across the shared 28-letter core, with the four Persian-only additions slotted in by visual resemblance rather than by any repeating cycle.
The two traditions also diverge sharply in what they do with the resulting number. Pythagorean numerology almost always reduces a name's total down to a single digit through repeated addition, treating that final digit as the meaningful result. Persian abjad frequently keeps the larger total intact instead, especially in chronogram poetry, where matching a specific, often large, year is the entire point, not collapsing everything down toward a number between 1 and 9. Someone already comfortable with Pythagorean numerology can pick up Persian abjad reasonably quickly, but should expect to work with larger, unreduced numbers and a genuinely different, non-cycling letter table from the very first calculation, plus four extra letters with borrowed rather than original values once a name strays outside the 28 letters Persian shares with Arabic.
How practice varies
Persian abjad reckoning shares its variation with the wider abjad world and adds some of its own. The four Persian-only letters conventionally take the values of the Arabic letters they resemble, though writers have not always handled them identically, and a name typed in Latin letters can be rendered into Persian script in more than one plausible way, each producing a different total. Purpose varies more than arithmetic: for some, abjad remains a literary craft of chronograms and dedications, while popular practice compares name totals for compatibility or luck, and modern websites attach personality meanings the classical tradition never carried. Different sources, different answers.
Limits: what this can't tell you
An abjad total is a sum, not a diagnosis: classical Persian letter-arithmetic dated buildings and honoured the dead, and nothing in that tradition supports predicting a person's future, health or finances from a name. Interpretations attached to particular totals here are modern and should be read as such. Bear in mind, too, that typing a name in Latin letters forces choices; Persian spelling in its own script often differs from any romanisation, and different transliterations yield different totals. Iranians themselves range from devoted chronogram enthusiasts to complete indifference.
