Greek Numerology: Isopsephy and the Pythagorean Myth

Where isopsephy comes from

Ancient Greek had no separate set of number symbols the way we use 1, 2, 3 today. Instead, the same 24 letters used for writing also stood in for numbers, each letter carrying a fixed numeric value. This dual use gave rise to isopsephy, a word built from isos, meaning equal, and psephos, meaning pebble, the small stones ancient Greeks used for counting and casting votes. Isopsephy is the practice of adding up the numeric value of every letter in a word or phrase, then comparing that total to the totals of other words. When two different words summed to the exact same number, ancient writers treated that shared total as a meaningful connection worth noting, even celebrating. The practice appears across several centuries of Greek writing, from private graffiti scratched into walls to more formal literary wordplay, showing it was widely understood by ordinary people, not just scholars or priests. Perhaps the most debated instance of this letter-number equivalence in ancient literature is the number of the beast, 666, in the Book of Revelation. Many scholars believe this figure encodes a name using an isopsephy-style method, though the identity it was meant to point to remains genuinely debated among historians rather than settled fact.

One of the clearest surviving examples comes from Pompeii, the Roman city buried by a volcanic eruption in 79 CE. A piece of graffiti scratched into a wall there declares love for a woman by giving the numeric value of her name instead of writing the name itself, letting the number carry the message on its own. This kind of playful, personal use shows isopsephy was not confined to philosophy or religion; ordinary residents used it for everyday jokes, riddles, and romantic gestures. The same technique also turns up in protective and magical inscriptions from the Greco-Roman world, where a phrase's numeric total was sometimes carved onto an amulet believed to carry the phrase's power along with it. The practice runs parallel to Hebrew gematria, a comparable letter-to-number system used in Jewish tradition, though the two developed independently of one another rather than one borrowing from the other. Both systems share the same underlying idea, letters doubling as numbers, but each grew out of its own alphabet and its own cultural context, arriving at broadly similar practices through separate historical paths.

What's historically attested

Isopsephy is solidly documented. Greek used its alphabet as its numerals, and the practice of totalling words appears in surviving graffiti at Pompeii, in Greco-Roman magical and protective inscriptions, and in literary wordplay; many scholars also read the famous 666 of the Book of Revelation as an isopsephy puzzle. Pythagoras was a real philosopher of the sixth century BCE, and later ancient sources attest that his followers treated number as the deep structure of reality, revering figures such as the tetractys. What the ancient record does not contain is the system now sold under his name: no surviving source shows Pythagoras or his school reducing names and birth dates to personality numbers. That method was assembled by modern authors, largely in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and attached to his reputation afterwards. The Greek love of number is ancient; the life path chart is not.

How the letter values work

The Greek numeral system runs through the alphabet in order, assigning each letter a fixed value, with a handful of gaps filled by old letters kept on purely as numerals. Alpha through theta, the first eight letters, carry most of the ones digits, but not in one unbroken run: alpha through epsilon give 1 through 5, then an archaic letter called digamma, later written stigma, supplies 6, before zeta, eta, and theta continue with 7, 8, and 9. From there the tens begin: iota equals 10, kappa equals 20, and so on up through 80, before reaching 90, a value assigned to another older letter called koppa that had otherwise dropped out of everyday Greek writing by the time isopsephy was in common use. The hundreds run from rho, valued at 100, through omega, valued at 800, covering the rest of the classical alphabet. The value 900 needed one more old letter, sampi, borrowed back into service purely as a numeral even though it too had fallen out of ordinary written use. Together, these values, the 24 classical letters plus digamma, koppa, and sampi, let every letter double as a number from 1 all the way up to 900.

To find a word's total, a reader simply adds together the value of every letter it contains, working straight through from the first letter to the last. There is no reduction step here comparable to the repeated digit-adding found in most modern numerology, where a number is collapsed down again and again until only one digit remains. An isopsephy total can run into the hundreds or even higher for a longer word or phrase, and that larger total is exactly what gets compared against other words, not some smaller reduced version of it. This is a meaningful difference from systems built later: isopsephy cares about the raw sum a phrase produces, not about squeezing that sum down into a single tidy digit between 1 and 9. The same method works just as well on a full sentence or a whole line of verse as it does on a single word, since every letter in a longer phrase simply adds its own value into the running total.

Because every letter already carried a numeric value inside ordinary Greek writing, isopsephy required no separate table to memorize beyond the alphabet itself. Anyone literate in Greek could work out a word's total simply by knowing how to read. This made the practice widely accessible in a way many later, more specialized numerology systems are not, since it grew directly out of the same alphabet used for everyday writing and commerce, rather than out of a system invented separately for personal readings. Coins, inscriptions, and private letters all draw on the same set of numeric letter values, showing how thoroughly the dual use of the alphabet was woven into daily Greek life. This everyday familiarity is part of why isopsephy could travel so easily from serious philosophical or religious writing into casual graffiti and games, since the underlying skill needed was simply literacy, not specialist training.

A short worked example

Take the Greek word agape, spelled α-γ-α-π-η, meaning love. Alpha equals 1, gamma equals 3, alpha equals 1 again, pi equals 80, and eta equals 8. Added together, 1 plus 3 plus 1 plus 80 plus 8 comes to 93. Under isopsephy, any other word or short phrase that also totals 93 would be treated as sharing a meaningful connection with agape, worth noting or exploring further. This is the same basic method used across the ancient examples that survive today, including the Pompeii graffiti mentioned earlier: sum every letter's value in order, then see what other words land on that same total.

How this compares to Pythagorean numerology

It helps to separate two different things that both carry the name Pythagorean, since conflating them is a common source of confusion. Pythagoras was a real ancient Greek philosopher, and his followers genuinely held numbers in something close to religious reverence. They studied the tetractys, a triangular arrangement of ten dots stacked in four rows, and treated it as a symbol of cosmic order. They also assigned symbolic meaning to odd and even numbers and taught that, in some deep sense, all is number, a phrase closely associated with Pythagorean thought. This philosophy of number is genuinely ancient and genuinely Greek, developed centuries before isopsephy itself became a widespread everyday practice.

The letter-to-number table used in modern Pythagorean numerology, the one that cycles A through I as 1 through 9 and then starts over at J, is a different matter entirely. It was not devised by Pythagoras or his ancient followers, and no surviving ancient Greek text describes it. It is a considerably later system, named in honor of Pythagoras because of his philosophical reverence for number, rather than a method he or his students actually practiced. Isopsephy, by contrast, is the genuinely ancient Greek practice, built directly on the real numeric values ancient Greek letters already carried in everyday writing. Someone interested in real Greek number history is looking at isopsephy and the Pythagorean philosophy of the tetractys; someone using the modern A-through-I letter chart is using a much newer system that simply borrows Pythagoras's name. Keeping these two strands separate, the genuinely ancient counting practice and the genuinely ancient philosophy of number on one side, the modern personal-reading table on the other, is the clearest way to talk about Greek numerology honestly.

How practice varies

Two kinds of variation meet under the Greek label. The historical letter values are fixed, but ancient isopsephy itself was used in scattered, inventive ways, in graffiti, epigram and riddle, rather than by one agreed method. The modern personality system that borrows Pythagoras's name varies far more: authors differ over reduction rules, over whether 11 and 22 are kept as master numbers, and over what each digit supposedly means. Some books calculate from Greek spellings, others from English ones, which changes every total. When Greek-styled calculators disagree, it is usually the modern layer, not the ancient arithmetic, doing the disagreeing.

Limits: what this can't tell you

Keep the two Greek inheritances apart: the historical practice of totalling Greek words, and the modern personality system that borrows Pythagoras's name. A number produced by either method is not evidence about your character or your future, and no total can predict events, health or finances. Ancient isopsephy was also playful and occasional, a device for riddles, devotion and graffiti, not a uniform doctrine every Greek held. Running a modern English name through Greek letter values adds a transliteration step the ancients never faced, with more than one defensible answer. Enjoy the arithmetic as a genuine window on the ancient world, and treat any reading built on it as reflection, not prophecy.
