Abjad Numerology: Arabic Letters as Numbers
A living tradition, still in everyday use
Abjad numerology, known formally as abjad hisab, meaning abjad reckoning, is a genuinely old and still-practiced system that assigns each of the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet a fixed numeric value. The name abjad itself comes from the first four letters of the traditional ordering, alif, ba, jim, dal, the same way the word alphabet comes from the Greek letters alpha and beta. Unlike some numerology traditions that survive only in historical texts, abjad hisab remains an active part of everyday culture across much of the Arabic-speaking and broader Islamic world today. It shows up in poetry, religious practice, and popular shorthand alike, making it one of the more continuously practiced letter-number systems still in use anywhere. The broader field of assigning meaning to letters and their numeric values is sometimes called ilm al-huruf, the science of letters, a wider area of study that abjad hisab sits within alongside other letter-based practices.
One of the clearest everyday examples is the Basmala, بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم, the four-word invocation meaning in the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, that opens nearly every chapter of the Quran and countless everyday documents, letters, and speeches across the Muslim world. Using the abjad values, the full four-word Basmala totals 786; the shorter opening words alone, بسم الله, total only 168, well short of the number most people mean. That number, 786, is now widely used on its own as a kind of respectful shorthand for the complete Basmala, appearing on wedding invitations, shop signs, vehicle plates, and important documents, especially across South Asia. Seeing 786 written somewhere is instantly recognized by many as standing in for the full invocation, a genuinely living piece of everyday numeric culture built directly on the abjad system.
What's historically attested
Abjad reckoning is genuinely old and well attested. The traditional abjad order preserves the ancient Semitic alphabet sequence, and Arabic letters served as numerals in manuscripts, on scientific instruments and in scholarly texts for many centuries. The chronogram tradition is richly documented: poets across the Arabic, Persian and Ottoman worlds composed verses whose letter totals encode a date, often marking a building, a death or an accession. The use of 786 as shorthand for the Basmala is a real and widespread custom, and a broader lettrist current, often called ilm al-huruf, explored letter symbolism within parts of the Islamic intellectual tradition. Two honest caveats belong here: the eastern and western regions of the Arabic-speaking world preserved slightly different value assignments for a few letters, and personality-style readings built on abjad totals are a modern layering rather than the system's historical core.
How the letter values work
The abjad order assigns numeric values that climb from 1 all the way to 1000, covering a far wider range than most letter-based numerology systems, which typically compress every letter down to single digits. In the more common Mashriqi, or eastern, ordering, alif (ا) carries the value 1, and the letters continue upward one at a time through the units, reaching ya (ي) at 10. From there the values jump into the tens: kaf (ك) equals 20, and the sequence climbs steadily through the tens up to qaf (ق) at 100. The hundreds and the final value work the same way, climbing through the remaining letters until reaching ghayn (غ), the very last letter in the traditional ordering, valued at 1000, the highest single-letter value the system uses. This climbing structure, units, then tens, then hundreds, then a final leap to 1000, is what gives the abjad table its distinctive shape compared with letter systems that simply cycle through 1 through 9 or 1 through 8 and start over.
A second, distinct ordering exists alongside the more common Mashriqi sequence: the Maghribi, or western, order, historically used across North Africa and Islamic Spain. It assigns different values to a handful of the later letters than the Mashriqi order does, a real and documented regional variation rather than a mistake or a later corruption. Someone comparing an abjad calculation done under one ordering against a calculation done under the other should expect the totals for words containing those particular letters to differ, simply because the two regional traditions built their tables slightly differently from early on. Most modern references to abjad hisab, including this guide, default to the more widely used Mashriqi ordering unless a specific regional context calls for the Maghribi version instead.
Beyond names, abjad hisab has long been used to build chronograms, a genuinely distinctive application where a poet composes a phrase or line of verse specifically so that its letters sum to a particular date, most often the current or a significant year. This practice, called tarikh in the tradition, appears carved into building inscriptions and worked into commemorative poetry across many centuries of Islamic architecture and literature, marking the date a mosque, tomb, or public building was completed without writing the numerals directly. A skilled composer could fold real literary meaning into a line while simultaneously encoding an exact date within its letters, a demanding form that combined mathematical precision with genuine poetic craft. This tradition of chronogram poetry flourished especially across the Ottoman, Persian, and Mughal courts, where a well-turned inscription could commemorate a ruler's building project and its exact completion date in a single elegant line.
A short worked example
Applying abjad hisab to a name works the same basic way as reading the Basmala's total. Take the short name Ali (علي), spelled with three Arabic letters: ain, lam, and ya. Ain (ع) carries the value 70, lam (ل) carries the value 30, and ya (ي) carries the value 10. Added together, 70 plus 30 plus 10 comes to 110. That total, 110, is the name's abjad value under the standard Mashriqi ordering. Just as with the Basmala's 786, this total can be compared against other words or phrases that also sum to 110, following the same comparative logic the wider tradition relies on. A chronogram composer working the same way, but in reverse, would instead start from a target date and search for a phrase whose letters happen to add up to that exact number, a considerably harder task that can take real time and skill to complete well.
How this compares to Pythagorean numerology
Pythagorean numerology assigns letter values purely by position within the Latin alphabet, cycling A through I as 1 through 9 and then simply repeating the same nine values again from J onward. Abjad hisab works on entirely different logic: each of the 28 Arabic letters carries its own individually fixed value, climbing all the way up to 1000 for the final letter, with no cycling or repetition anywhere in the table. A name run through the abjad system can therefore reach a far larger total before any reduction is even considered, compared to a Pythagorean total built from a repeating 1-through-9 cycle.
The two traditions also differ in how central digit reduction is to the practice. Pythagorean numerology almost always reduces a name's total down to a single digit, treating that final digit as the meaningful result to interpret. Abjad hisab, by contrast, frequently keeps the larger total intact and works with it directly, especially in chronogram poetry, where the whole point is matching a specific, often large, year, not collapsing the total down to a single digit between 1 and 9. Someone comfortable with Pythagorean numerology can still learn abjad hisab fairly quickly, but should expect to work with noticeably larger numbers and a genuinely different, non-repeating letter table from the very first calculation. Both traditions still share the same basic starting move, converting letters into numbers and adding them up, even though what each tradition does with the resulting total afterward diverges considerably from there.
How practice varies
Abjad practice varies along genuinely old lines. The eastern and western letter orders assign different values to a handful of letters, so one name can carry two legitimate totals before interpretation even begins. Uses differ as much as tables: the chronogram is a literary craft, letter-science traditions within Islamic thought put the values to contemplative and talismanic work, and everyday folk practice compares name totals informally. Scholars and religious authorities have also long disagreed about how much weight any of this deserves. Modern websites flatten the landscape into a single calculator, but the tradition itself has never been that tidy.
Limits: what this can't tell you
An abjad total is sensitive to choices a calculator quietly makes for you. Names not originally written in Arabic must be transliterated, and different plausible spellings give different totals; the eastern and western value tables also disagree on a few letters, so the same name can legitimately produce more than one number. Historically the system's strengths were record-keeping, dating and literary artistry rather than personal prediction, and Muslim scholars past and present hold a range of views on numerological uses, some firmly disapproving. No total can foretell events, health or wealth. Read your result as an entry point into a deep literary and scientific heritage, and as material for reflection rather than forecast.
