Soul Urge Number

The soul urge number, also called the heart's desire, is the sum of the vowels in your full birth name. Y counts as a vowel when it sounds like one, such as in Lynn. It describes your inner motivation, what you privately want rather than what you show the world.

How it's calculated

  1. Write out your full birth name and underline every vowel: A, E, I, O, U, and Y when it sounds like one.
  2. Convert each vowel to a number using the Pythagorean chart.
  3. Add the values together and reduce to a single digit, keeping master numbers.

Example John Smith: the vowels are O(6) and I(9), adding up to 15, which reduces to 1 + 5 = 6. The soul urge number is 6.

Common questions

How is soul urge different from the destiny number?
The destiny number uses every letter of the name; the soul urge number uses only the vowels. Soul urge reveals private motivation, while destiny reveals talent.
Does Y always count as a vowel?
No. Y counts only when it makes a vowel sound, as in Lynn or Mary. When it makes a consonant sound, as in Yolanda, it is treated as a consonant.
What does a high or low soul urge number mean?
There is no good or bad number here. Each digit from 1 to 9 describes a different inner want, from independence to service to creative expression.
