Essence Number

The essence number is calculated by adding together the values of whichever transit letters are active during a particular year of life, then reducing the total. It is a name-based timing number read alongside the personal year, adding a second layer to the birth-date-based timing that the personal year provides. This is an advanced chart element.

How it's calculated

  1. Determine which letters of your full name are currently active as transit letters for your age.
  2. Convert each active letter to its numerology value using the Pythagorean chart.
  3. Add the values together and reduce to a single digit, keeping master numbers.

Example If the active transit letters for a given year are J, O, and H, add their values 1 + 6 + 8 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6. The essence number for that year is 6.

Common questions

How is the essence number different from the personal year?
The personal year comes from your birth date and the calendar year. The essence number comes from your name instead, so numerologists read the two together for a fuller picture of timing.
Does the essence number change every year?
Yes, though more slowly than the personal year. It changes only when the set of active transit letters shifts, which can happen partway through a year.
Is the essence number a beginner concept?
No. It is an advanced chart element that builds on the transit letters, so it is usually studied after the core numbers and the personal year are already familiar.
