How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

Your life path number is the most important number in numerology. Derived from your complete birth date, it reveals your life's purpose, natural talents, and the challenges you'll face. Calculating it takes just a few simple steps.
1

Write Down Your Full Birth Date

Start with your complete date of birth in numerical format. For example, if you were born on March 15, 1990, write it as: Month = 03, Day = 15, Year = 1990.

2

Reduce Each Component Separately

Reduce the month, day, and year to single digits (or master numbers 11, 22) individually. Month: 0 + 3 = 3. Day: 1 + 5 = 6. Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.

3

Add the Three Reduced Numbers Together

Take your three reduced numbers and add them: 3 + 6 + 1 = 10. If the result is a two-digit number (and not a master number), reduce it again: 1 + 0 = 1.

4

Your Life Path Number Is the Final Single Digit

The final single digit (or master number 11, 22) is your life path number. In our example, the life path number is 1. This number reveals your core personality traits, life purpose, and destiny.

Worked Example: Born December 29, 1985

Month: 1 + 2 = 3. Day: 2 + 9 = 11 (master number, keep as 11). Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5. Sum: 3 + 11 + 5 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Life Path Number: 1.

What Are Master Numbers?

Master numbers 11 and 22 are special numbers that are not reduced to a single digit during calculation. They carry heightened spiritual significance and greater potential. If your calculation produces 11 or 22 at any intermediate step, preserve it. Master number 11 combines the traits of 1 and 2 with amplified intuition. Master number 22, the Master Builder, combines the vision of 11 with the practicality of 4.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Adding all digits at once instead of reducing month, day, and year separately first — this can cause you to miss master numbers.
  • Reducing master numbers 11 and 22 to single digits — these should be preserved as they carry special significance.
  • Using the wrong date format — always use your actual birth date, not your due date or adopted name date.
  • Forgetting to reduce multi-digit intermediate results — always keep reducing until you reach a single digit or master number.
