Same Name, Different Systems: Why Results Diverge

Type the same name into calculators built on different numerology systems and you will get different numbers, each presented with equal confidence. That is not an error; it is the systems working as designed, because each one uses its own letter table, its own reduction rules and its own history. Here we run a single name, Maria Lopez, through three approaches and show exactly where and why the answers part ways.

The Setup: One Name, Three Lenses

We will compute a name number for Maria Lopez three times: with the Pythagorean chart this site uses, with the Chaldean chart, and with a Hebrew gematria-style approach. The name stays fixed; only the system changes. Watching the same ten letters produce different totals is the clearest way to see that a numerology result is a property of the name and the system together, never of the name alone. Keep that in mind whenever two sources disagree about your number: before asking who is right, ask which table each one is using.

A note on expectations before we start: these three systems are not three laboratories measuring the same quantity with different instruments. They are three symbolic frameworks with different assumptions, and the tradition itself, at its most honest, treats them that way.

Pythagorean: 1 Through 9, Repeating

The Pythagorean chart assigns A=1 through I=9, then repeats: J=1, K=2, and so on to Z=8. For MARIA: M=4, A=1, R=9, I=9, A=1, a total of 24, which reduces to 6. For LOPEZ: L=3, O=6, P=7, E=5, Z=8, a total of 29, which reduces to 11, a master number this system preserves, with 2 as its fully reduced form. The whole name totals 24 plus 29, which is 53, and 5 plus 3 gives an Expression number of 8.

Despite the name, this chart is not documented from Pythagoras; it is a modern system, popularized in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, that borrows his reputation for number mysticism. Its alphabetical neatness, values simply following letter order, is exactly what makes it easy to learn and easy to verify.

Chaldean: A Different Table and Compound Numbers

The Chaldean chart is not alphabetical. Its values run: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=8, G=3, H=5, I=1, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=7, P=8, Q=1, R=2, S=3, T=4, U=6, V=6, W=6, X=5, Y=1, Z=7, and no letter is assigned 9, a number the system sets apart. For MARIA: M=4, A=1, R=2, I=1, A=1 totals 9. For LOPEZ: L=3, O=7, P=8, E=5, Z=7 totals 30. The full name totals 39, and Chaldean practice reads that compound number 39 for its own meaning before reducing it, 3 plus 9 giving 12 and then 3.

So Maria Lopez is an 8 in Pythagorean and a 3 in Chaldean, from the identical letters. The divergence needs no mystery to explain it: R is worth 9 in one table and 2 in the other, I is 9 versus 1, Z is 8 versus 7. Different inputs to the sum, different sum.

Gematria: Ancient, But Not for Latin Letters

Hebrew gematria is genuinely old: a long-standing practice of reading number values from Hebrew letters, with aleph as 1, the values climbing into the hundreds, and traditionally no reduction to a single digit at all. But it applies to Hebrew script. Maria Lopez in Latin letters has no gematria value; to get one, the name must first be transliterated into Hebrew, and every transliteration choice changes the total. One reasonable rendering gives Maria as mem, resh, yod, he, totaling 40 plus 200 plus 10 plus 5, which is 255, and Lopez as lamed, vav, pe, zayin, totaling 30 plus 6 plus 80 plus 7, which is 123, for a combined 378.

A different but equally defensible spelling would land elsewhere, and classical gematria would compare 378 with other words of the same value rather than reduce it, though a modern numerologist reducing it would reach 9. The lesson is that borrowing gematria's prestige for a Latin-alphabet name means stacking a transliteration convention on top of a system that was never designed for this alphabet.

Why They Differ, and What That Tells You

The three results, 8, 3 and 378, differ for plainly identifiable reasons: different letter tables, different reduction rules, and different source alphabets. It is also worth being honest about the historical footing, because marketing often is not. The Chaldean system is routinely advertised as the oldest, inherited from ancient Babylon, but the system as actually practiced was codified around the early twentieth century, notably in the books of the palmist known as Cheiro; the Babylonian attribution is a branding frame, not a documented lineage. Gematria is genuinely ancient, but for Hebrew. The Pythagorean chart is modern with a borrowed Greek name.

None of this makes any system useless, but it should change how you hold the results. These are lenses, not competing measurements of one hidden truth, so it makes no sense to ask which number is really yours. Choose a lens, learn its rules well enough to check the arithmetic yourself, and treat what it shows you as a prompt for reflection.
